Reesum Monastery is located at Rinchenpong of West Sikkim.
You will find many Buddhist Monasteries all over Sikkim but the old Reesum Monastery has its own charm and religious significance to express.
Word Reesum is derived from the Tibetan language which literally means meeting place of three hills.
It was built by Pintso Lepcha, one of the renounced landlords of the time, for the well-being of the people living in the region.
If you are in Rinchenpong the Reesum Monastery should be on your list of places to visit located up to the top of the hill with 360° views to look around the place, panoramic view of Mt Kanchenjunga and various birds, orchids through the forest.
One can easily hire a taxi from Rinchenpong bazaar which will take you up to Rinchenpong Monastery and then a nearly half an hour hike to reach the destination.

a year agoAn old monastery, which was founded in 1717 according to locals. One needs to go through a blessed road (stairs) from Rinchenpong Monastery to reach it. The journey is through the jungle. It takes around 20 min to go up and 10 min to come down. In monsoon, the forest is lush green and the scenery is mesmerizing. However, there will be leeches and the path can be slippery. There is a meditation centre beside the monastery where visitors are not allowed. Tibetan Mantras were chanted when I went there.

2 years agoA short hike through the jungles from Rinchenpong Monastery will lead you to the stairs that vanish upward within the jungles. Follow the stairs to reach this amazing place. A ward to caution though - in the monsoon months be careful of leeches - they abound the area.
