Awesome place in an offbeat location. The location is near Bermiok, but not exactly in Bermiok. The Google Maps location is accurate, and you can easily trust it.
Now coming to the ambience. It is a traditional Nepali home. The feel you will get is purely traditional Nepali. Excellent rooms. All bamboo made, with wardrobe, tea table and chairs.
The balcony is the place you will be all the time, if you are a bit tired after walking around in the beautiful surroundings. We stayed at the balcony till late at night, and it was surreal. It was full of clouds. It was inexplicable actually.
We got local rhododendron wine there. They themselves make it. The taste was very nice.
Stayed from 23-25Oct..very nice location and the host and hostess Padmaji and her brother did wonderfully so as to do everything inspite of their family festivities. Fortunate to stay in such a lovely place, good rooms, good people and the best place amidst the nature. Needless to say we would again visit this lovely place.
This was my wife's and my first ever visit to Sikkim, and having stayed at a couple of other places in Gangtok and Darap, we landed in Mr.Ganesh's homestay at Martam village.
The access road to the property is currently under construction, but Mr.Ganesh himself drove down to the main road and guided our car driver to the place.
The room provided to us was spacious and warm, supplied with room heater and hot water - very cozy. We spent the new year 2023 here with other guests over a campfire, local cuisine and taste some of the local millet-based drink (Chaang). Mr. Ganesh's entire family, including his wife, Mrs. Padma, his parents and even his visiting sister's family were very warm and welcoming and answered all our questions related to their place and customs very patiently.
The next morning, after a traditional, yet filling breakfast, we went on a walk through the cardamom fields and forests of Upper Martam, returning via a very steep winding route through forests and a century-old cave temple of Lord Shiva. We got to eat hot food at a villager's home on the way back.
The hosts were very welcoming all through our two-day stay, and it was lovely to know them and the place, and experience the wonderful nature in and around their home. My wife and I loved every bit of the stay there, and we would recommend this place to anyone looking for an authentic homestay experience.
I have stayed at many homestays across Sikkim in the last 10 years. I have experienced excellent hospitality from very nice people. But, Dhungay homestay was an exception. We had stayed at Dhungay Homestay in the last week of November in 2014. Their rooms and other facilities were very good. But, the owner Ganesh took us for a half day trek, although we were reluctant and we wanted to enjoy our stay at the homestay. He took us to a nearby village and made us stay in a local villagers house with very basic amenities and one common bathroom, in the chilling cold of winter. It was Ganesh Chhetri's pre-planned move. He didn't want us to stay in his homestaý that night. As a result, me and my wife faced tremendous harassment. Next morning we had to go to a dirty common washroom. Ganesh took full payment and left for his homestay in the morning. We took a vehicle to Geyzing from thereunder were supposed to collect our luggage from Dhungay homestay on our way. But, we were shocked to find that our luggages were dumped by Ganesh at a roadside shop.
Ganesh Chhetri's horrendous hospitality, rude behaviour and the harassment which he made us go through left a deep scar on our heart. We then thought about never visiting Sikkim again, or even if we visit never to stay in a homestay. Ganesh made us stay in such horrible places and cheated us by charging payment of his luxurious homestay.
